Grits and polishes

Q.    What grits should I use for rocks in my tumbler?
A.    For most stones in a barrel (rotary) tumbler, we recommend a four step process.

  • Coarse grinding is done with 60/90. The "split" grits, 60/90 etc., work as well as the more expensive straight graded grits for most tumbling.

  • Medium grinding uses 120/220.

  • The fine grind works well with 500F.

  • CPP polish does the job on most stones, hard or soft.

A great way to get this series is with our 4 STEP GRIT KIT. It comes packed in four re-closeable plastic jars proportioned to grind and polish 10 - 14lbs of rock.

Q.    What is the "BEST POLISH"
A.    There is no one polish that is best for everything.

  • Pro-Polish is a polish that if you have not tried you should. Pro-Polish polishes much like Tin Oxide, but at half the price. This 1/2micron range fine grade alumina polish works on most materials, including many problem stones.

  • Tin Oxide can help you put that super polish on Opal and many Quartz family stones.

  • Most Quartz type stones and Glass polish very well with our Optical Grade Cerium Oxide. For a more brilliant finish, you may want to try Super Cerium (also known as French Cerium), our ultra high purity Cerium Oxide (it's white!).

  • Lapis, Jade, and Rhodonite polish very well with Chrome Oxide (yes we know it is a messy Green, but it does the job on these hard to polish stones). Chrome Oxide also works well on Quartz.

  • Sapphire Powder is the equal in every way to the old Linde A and B. Used mainly for faceting, it is also becoming a standard for polishing cabs by many professional cutters.

  • CPP is designed for use in a rotary tumbler. CPP works on most stones, soft or hard. CPP is very low priced!

Burnishing Compound:  Great for both silver and gold. A high quality burnishing and lubricating compound. Use in the ratio of one heaping tablespoon to one gallon of water. Adjust if necessary. For bright, clean finishes, the burnishing compound must be used in the right proportion and any resulting sludge rinsed away before particles embed and dull the metal.

Ceramic Angle (Angle cut triangle):  A 3/8" x 5/8" size ceramic media containing no abrasives. When tumbling rocks, use ceramic angles as a pre-filler to occupy space inside the tumbler and as a carrier to deliver grain abrasives to the work pieces. Adds weight to the load for increased tumbling action and separates work pieces to eliminate parts sticking together.

COB--Corn Cob 10/14 Mesh:  A pithy material made from the hard woody ring of the corn cob. It is used as a very gentle finish and drying media in polishing and burnishing metals. Absorbs many times its weight. Readily removes oil, dirt and grease from tumbled parts.

WALNUT-C--Walnut Shells, Coarse 8/12 Mesh:  Use in a tumbler with a pinch of powdered red rouge to put a brilliant polish on brass shell cartridges or a hand polished look on silver and gold jewelry.

WALNUT-F--Walnut Shells, Fine 18/40 Mesh:  Use in a tumbler with a pinch of powdered red rouge to put a brilliant polish on brass shell cartridges or a hand polished look on silver and gold jewelry.

Plastic Pellets:  1/8" plastic pellets act as cushioning media when tumbling delicate materials, especially during the polishing cycle. Pellets float off for easy separation and reuse.

Plastic Pyramids:  A 1/4" size plastic media used wet on all precious metals for cut down prior to burnishing with steel shot. Fast cutting and produces an excellent finish. The plastic pyramids are made with a 400 grit quartz abrasive embedded inside. The batch must be rinsed clean periodically to maintain clean media and metal surfaces.

Steel shot Jewelry Mixture:  A superior mix of balls, pins, ball cones and cylinders. Just the right sizes for jewelry work. The mixture insures maximum coverage of a wide variety of work pieces. Shot is made from hard, low carbon steel with a mirror bright surface. Use 10 parts shot to 1 part work piece (by volume) using burnishing soap and water. CAUTION: The burnishing compound must be used in the right proportion and any resulting sludge rinsed away before particles embed and dull the metal. Five pounds approximate on pine in volume.

Alumina Polishes

Use these high grade Aluminum Oxide polishing compounds for both tumbling and lapping processes.  New processing techniques produce this extremely fine, well graded polish that in most cases out performs all other polishing compounds except diamond dust.  It compares with the old Linde and Tin Oxide compounds

POLY-AL F

Poly-Al F is our SUPER POLISH.  It has an ideal particle size, 0.2 microns, to put a super polish on most any stones that have been prepared properly for polishing.

POLY-AL Z

Poly-al Z is our most economical polishing powder.  Gives an excellent polish if given additional time.  It is 0.35 microns.

 POLY-AL T

Poly-al T is SUBMICRON, 0.8 microns, and hard enough to prepare stones for polishing if silicon carbide is used for sanding.  As a polish, it is a major improvement over tin oxide.  On flat laps, it polishes stones faster than anything but diamond dust.

POLY-AL LS

Poly-al LS is an AGGRESSIVE powder.  At 1.4 – 1.6 microns, it is an ideal pre-polish.

When ordering specify 'Type of Tumbling Polish' as well as the size ordering.
