Lap Sanders

If you want to polish flat surfaces, like book ends and geodes, then you use a vibra-lap. If you want polished nuggets of tumbled stones, then you use a tumbler, if you want to cut and shape rocks for jewelry or polish an end of petrified wood, then you use a cabochon unit. There are other more advanced methods of polishing, like making spheres, marbles, faceting gemstones, and carving.

Here is the differences explained:

Vibra-lapping: To polish a flat surface, like a book end or geode, you use a saw to cut your flat surface, then a grinder to remove any burrs left by the saw, then a vibra-lap to polish.

A vibra-lap is a round pan that vibrates. You place grit and water in the flat pan and then place your rock in on the grit. It vibrates and grinds down the surface. When vibralapping, you complete the process in 3 stages--coarse, fine, and polish. Each stage takes 6-8 hours. You fill the pan 2/3rds full of rock, so if you are polishing geodes, usually you can do 3-4 sets at a time.

Horizontal Maxi unit has cast aluminum body with beautiful green hammer tone finish. Arbor rides in precision ball bearings, neoprene sealed and greased for life.

Each unit comes with 3 each (Quick change) 8" x 1/2" - 20 RH threaded disc type aluminum heads with 1/8" hard rubber, no hold, mounted on face and 1/3 HP, 110V, 60 HZ heavy duty motor with carrying handle. Aluminum head turns at 1410 RPM.

8" Standard Maxi Lap Three (3) quick change aluminum heads and fast cutting silicon carbide abrasive system

Standard kit: 2 each 8" diameter x NH silicon carbide sanding discs, 100 & 400 grit; 1 each 8" diameter x NH, 1/8" thick felt polishing disc; and one pound of optical grade cerium oxide polish. Discs are affixed to hard rubber face with "Stick-N-Peel" adhesive.

8" Standard Diamond Maxi Lap Three (3) quick change aluminum heads and faster cutting diamond cloth abrasive system

The Standard Kit has now been replaced with the faster cutting Diamond Abrasive System. This system consists of 2 each 8" x NH diamond sanding discs, 220 & 1200 grit; 1 each 8" x NH, 1/8" thick felt polishing disc; and one pound of optical grade cerium oxide polish powder. Discs are affixed to hard rubber face with "Stick-N-Peel" adhesive

8" Super Diamond Maxi Lap Three (3) quick change aluminum heads & fastest cutting diamond grid-a-brade abrasive system

The Standard Kit has now been replaced with the fastest cutting Diamond Abrasive System. This system consists of 3 each 8" x NH grid metal bond diamond cutting discs, 100, 220 & 600 grit. 8" magnetic holder is included. Simply attach the adhesive backed, flexible magnetic holder to hard rubber face of one head. No additional adhesive or shaft nuts are required. Your grinding head is now ready to take diamond cutting discs. When you are through with one grit size, simply lift it off and position the next disc. It's that easy!

Also included: 1 each 8" x NH cork polishing disc, mounted on hard rubber face of one head and one pound of 2F pumice polish powder; and 1 each 8" x NY, 1/8" thick felt polishing disc mounted on hard rubber face of one head and one pound of optical grade cerium oxide polish powder. Note: Cork and felt discs are affixed to hard rubber face with "Stick-N-Peel" adhesive.

Features:

• Can accommodate a number of specimens at the same time

• Tempered aluminum lap plate is grooved in a criss-cross pattern, permitting abrasive particles to circulate between the lap plate and the work piece so that the abrasive itself is continuously being crushed into a smaller size--this reduces the number of different grit sizes which are needed

• Turn over the lap plate to the polishing pad side which is cemented on. Combined with polishing compound, a fine mirror-like finish is produced easily

• Lap plates are manufactured from heat-treated aluminum alloy to produce a tough, wear-resistant surface. Each surface has milled V-grooves in a square grid pattern.

• Suspension is controlled by aircraft strength cable, adjustable for fine leveling to keep work pieces evenly distributed over the lap plate surface.
