Lubricants

Q.     What coolant should I use?
A.    On hard stones, oil is best. Next best is a specially formulated cutting lubricant such as Blade Koolerant number 1 (yellow label), Blade Koolerant number 2 (pink label)  or LUBE COOL 4800 mixed  per label directions. Water is a poor third place. Water has no lubricating properties. This will lead to reduced cutting life of the blade. Water can also cause poor bearing life due to lack of lubrication and rust.  For soft stones, water is a satisfactory coolant. However, just water can cause rust and bearing problems. We recommend using a cutting lubricant such as Blade Koolerant number 1 (yellow label), Blade Koolerant number 2 (pink label) or LUBE COOL 4800, which contains rust inhibitors. If you are cutting porous stones and are worried about them being oil soaked, here is a "trick of the trade". Soak your stones in water to fill all the pores before sawing with water. Soaking time may vary from less than an hour to more than a day. A few  drops of liquid soap or detergent can help the water penetrate more quickly.  The longer the soaking time required, the less porous your stone is and the less likely it is to soak up any oil.  After sawing, a little Mr. Clean in water will help draw out any residual oil.
